Just over twenty years ago I had a sudden desire to learn something of Christian Science and find out whether it would give me peace of mind. My husband, who had been a prisoner of war for over three years, was not well; and the medical prediction was that he would not recover. It was wonderful to have him home; but the fear that we would again be parted remained with me, and at times it made me quite ill.
I wrote to a sister-in-law of this dread and asked about Christian Science. She told me of the indestructible nature of the real man, as outlined in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I accepted the truth of my real spiritual selfhood with great joy.
After that introduction, I read Science and Health straight through. I had found what I had been seeking—a greater understanding of God and His Son, Christ Jesus. It was a wonderful exercise that left me with an awareness of God's tender love for each of His ideas. I immediately felt well; and my husband's health gradually improved, though he did not study Science himself. I ceased worrying about the children and relaxed in the knowledge that God was caring for them at all times. Mrs. Eddy gives us this heightened view (Science and Health, p. 557): "Divine Science rolls back the clouds of error with the light of Truth, and lifts the curtain on man as never born and as never dying, but as coexistent with his creator."
