LETTERS TO THE PRESS
From Christian Science Committees on Publication
Careless labels
Announcements of talks or films on "cults" are turning up in newspapers fairly frequently. Most objective observers would agree that Christian Science fits none of the criteria for a cult. But some prejudiced critics promote the stereotype nevertheless.
In her message "To the Christian World" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 104), Mary Baker Eddy tells of how the comfortable Pharisees and pagans of the day said Jesus stirred up the people and St. Paul was a "pestilent fellow." "But what would be thought to-day of a man that should call St. Paul a 'pest,'" Mrs. Eddy asks, "and what will be thought tomorrow of him who shall call a Christian Scientist a 'pest'?"
