When I was a junior in high school, a condition...

When I was a junior in high school, a condition formed on my foot that made walking very difficult. I limped around using just the toes of my foot because I couldn't step down completely. At that time, my sister (with whom I lived) and I did a great deal of prayerful work in Christian Science, and as a result I was able to finish my year at school.

In the early summer I attended a large picnic with friends of my sister and her husband. By this time we thought it wise to bandage the heel of my foot. While I was sitting on the sidelines watching everyone swimming in the pool, one of the men in our group came over and sat beside me. He wondered why I was not swimming, so I told him that I had a sore heel. He asked if he could see the foot, and I let him. (I did not find out until later that he was one of the city's leading physicians.) After examining my foot, he pronounced the condition a tumor and said it had spread up the leg and possibly throughout my body. He urged me to come to his office the next morning.

Instead, the next morning found my sister and me in the office of a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to support our efforts through prayer and study.
