The Christ and tradition
A happy and frequent lesson of the holidays is how the Christ supplants some merely traditional practices and uplifts others. In those instances when spiritual enlightenment gives meaning to a custom or dictates that we abandon it, holidays more nearly resemble their true name of "holy days." Serving the Christ, we become less the servant of tradition.
In a popular children's book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the miscreant Grinch, in order to stop Christmas from coming, stole all the traditional trappings. But, he discovered, as maybe some of us have found out this year:
