Many years ago, while my daughter was an infant, both of my breasts became inflamed. It was very painful, and I no longer knew what to do, since I was nursing the child. I went to my mother and asked for help, because I knew that she was acquainted with Christian Science.
When I arrived at her home, she was just leaving for work. She assured me of God's ever-present love, and said that she would pray for me. She spoke briefly of the true idea of God, and handed me a copy of The Herald of Christian Science, German Edition. She pointed out several parts of the magazine that would be helpful and then left.
I sat on the terrace reading the Herald, and I became so absorbed in the new ideas it presented that I forgot everything around me. When my mother returned from work, I realized that I was completely free of the trouble.
Another time, my three-year-old son was spending the day with my mother. When I arrived at the house, she told me that the boy had a fever and refused to eat, so she had put him to bed. I rejected the suggestion of illness immediately as a lie about God's perfect idea, who in reality is continually manifesting health and happiness. We went into the room, and at that moment my son got up and was perfectly well. He ate and then went to play. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us (pp. 474-475): "Truth destroys falsity and error, for light and darkness cannot dwell together. Light extinguishes the darkness, and the Scripture declares that there is 'no night there.' To Truth there is no error,—all is Truth."
When my oldest daughter came down with malaria, she requested medical treatment for the condition. Her health improved, but several months later the fever appeared again. I said to my daughter, "This time let us trust in God." I got out Science and Health and read this passage from page 393: "Mind is the master of the corporeal senses, and can conquer sickness, sin, and death." I continued to pray for my daughter, and she was much improved. But the following day the symptoms became evident again. I implored her to again think over the statement we had read from Science and Health. When she did this, within minutes she was perfectly well; the malady had disappeared for good.
More recently, my daughter arrived at my home late one evening with her child, who was about eighteen months old. She asked if they could stay with me. The child was vomiting constantly, and my daughter didn't want to go to the doctor. She said she had more trust in Science, and she requested me to pray for the baby.
In Proverbs we read (3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." I urged my daughter to exercise heartfelt trust in God, and not to be afraid. We spoke of the little one's immortal identity as God's child, tenderly surrounded by His love. I then prayed, acknowledging the truth of this assuring statement (Science and Health, p. 567): "Truth and Love come nearer in the hour of woe, when strong faith or spiritual strength wrestles and prevails through the understanding of God."
I had been reading from Science and Health for quite some time when suddenly my daughter became very alarmed over the symptoms. Immediately I affirmed out loud the fact that God is Life, and man is never dependent on matter for his life. In that instant a foreign particle came out of the baby's mouth. Soon she was well and peacefully asleep. There were no aftereffects.
I thank Christ Jesus, who suffered and triumphed as our Way shower. And I thank his humble follower Mrs. Eddy, who has given us a precious gift in her writings—the Science of Christian healing.
