You do have a purpose

Finding one's purpose in life is a wonderful discovery. So many people are looking for it! Actually, each one of us already has a spiritual purpose, whether we know it or not. It's our only purpose. It can't be hidden, delayed, lost, or taken away. And if we haven't discovered it yet, now is certainly a good time!

What, exactly, is our spiritual purpose? It is to express God, to be what He made us to be. Humanly, our purpose is to be so motivated by God alone—by ever-present, all-powerful Love—that we strive to make our every thought, intent, and action reflect Him. This Christly goal is pure resolve, with a pure resolution. It is holy intent, with a holy conclusion. It is unselfed seeking, with unselfish attainment. It is wholly giving, which blesses all mankind.

At a time when I was learning more about my spiritual purpose, I was regularly visiting, as a Christian Science chaplain, a facility for those medically diagnosed as severely mentally retarded. In my approach to the work, I tried to recognize that even where the human picture looked hopeless, God was the only presence. Yet at first I was tempted to look for some merely material purpose in the lives of these patients. So I prayed that I might have a clearer view of man as the idea of Spirit, reflecting the perfection of divine Mind.
