I had always felt that being raised in a home of Christian Scientists was one of my greatest blessings. But I found that this does not exempt one from having to prove for himself the truths of man's spiritual being as a perfect child of God. The Apostle Paul said (Phil. 2:12, 13): "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." Mrs. Eddy says on page 22 of Science and Health, "Love is not hasty to deliver us from temptation, for Love means that we shall be tried and purified."

Although I attended the Christian Science Sunday School regularly, I took a passive rather than an active interest. I relied on my mother's spiritual understanding and the help of a Christian Science practitioner to achieve healing. One time, during an epidemic, I was quickly healed of diphtheria.

During the Thanksgiving holidays in my first year of college, I was healed of a severe case of apparent blood poisoning. The condition spread through parts of my body. Although I was unconscious for almost two days after arriving home, in two weeks time I was back in school, completely healed. I had also overcome fear and revulsion over taking a certain course that was presented in a very sensual manner. And I gained dominion over other phases of mortal thinking from which I had been protected while growing up. This was accomplished through my mother's support and the prayer of a practitioner. For my part, I expressed solid faith and trust in divine Love.
