From clairvoyance to Christian Science

One of an occasional series of articles by young people who in recent years have become Christian Scientists. They explain how they became interested in Christian Science, what convinced them of its utility and truth, and how its teachings have changed their lives.

As a youngster I turned to religion for answers, but I was dissatisfied with traditional theology. The concept that Christ Jesus was the only begotten Son of God bothered me. I felt it meant that no matter how hard I tried, no matter how much God loved me, I would never be as acceptable to Him as Jesus, never as perfect as His Son. So why even try?

Recently, while reading Mrs. Eddy's chapter "Genesis" in Science and Health, I came across these lines in her exegesis of the first sentence in the Bible: "This word beginning is employed to signify the only,—that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe." Science and Health, p. 502; Turning to the Bible, I saw that the only begotten son of God is actually described in the first chapter. He is the man God created spiritually, characterized by and capable only of good. Christ Jesus, in his unique mission, came to show us this. In some ways I feel that in revealing this fact, the Christ, Truth, has done for me what it did for Lazarus.
