I first heard Christian Science mentioned by my wife five years ago. In spite of my initial hesitancy in accepting this teaching, I very quickly had a wonderful healing. I had been working for thirty years in the hotel business, and I was managing a restaurant that gave me a good many worries. I was harassed by the scarcity of help, and overall costs were constantly rising. I was living in a state of anxiety. The symptoms of a gallbladder inflammation developed, causing me much suffering. The doctor I consulted gave me medicines, but without any result. Soon I was no longer able to work, eat, lie down, or even remain in a standing position. After about two weeks of this suffering caused by gallstones, I found myself in a hospital in a state of despair—a miserable frame of mind.

My wife told me later that the specialist, after examining me, had taken her aside to inform her of the situation, which seemed desperate. My condition was such he could no longer operate. My wife asked me if I would consent to her requesting the help of a Christian Science practitioner. She was very calm and confident, and I consented. I didn't receive any medication. The practitioner's prayer brought to light the operation of God and His Christ.

The third day I felt completely without pain or weakness, and I asked the doctor to allow me to leave. He was incredulous and tried to explain to me the seriousness of my case. But I asked him to release me. He could not understand what had happened to me. I really didn't understand myself; I only knew that I had to leave the hospital and go home. Finally I insisted, and he agreed to my release. He said that at home I would have to stay in bed, follow a prescribed diet, and notify the physician immediately of any need.
