Life's true meaning

The search for meaning presents a pressing problem to some people. Wanting more than comfort, success, or even happiness, they seek to understand existence: Why are we here? Why should we do or not do this or that? Have our accomplishments any real meaning?

As a Christian Scientist, I thought my need for meaning would be met if I gained a better understanding of God as Mind and of my relationship to Him as His idea. So I sought to learn more about the divine Mind—especially the qualities of Mind, such as discernment and infinite intelligence. This study and prayer were rewarding and met the practical demand on me to express intelligence in my work.

But something was missing. Then one day my eyes rested on a statement in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health. There Mrs. Eddy quotes John's great revelation of the divine name and nature. " 'God is Love,' " she writes. "More than this we cannot ask, higher we cannot look, farther we cannot go." Science and Health, p. 6; That filled the void for me! I knew I need not, cannot, look farther than infinite, divine Love in my search for meaning.
