Years ago, out of curiosity, my wife and I wandered into a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I soon learned that the smoking habit is not consistent with the teachings and practice of Christian Science. This made me feel that Science wasn't for me, as I had been smoking for over twenty years and didn't want to quit. However, I began to learn something of my real spiritual selfhood as a pure, flawless idea of God. It wasn't long before cigarettes were no longer enjoyable. I switched brands but the new ones were no better. Then I realized there had been a healing of the smoking habit, although I had not prayed specifically to overcome it.

Now I wondered if Christian Science could heal my sick headaches and constipation. These ailments left me completely as I applied simple spiritual truths of perfect God and perfect man. When we establish the perfection of being in consciousness, it is manifested bodily.

I had not yet read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, so I went to a Christian Science Reading Room and bought a copy. My wife and I read the book together, but at first much of it seemed strange. However, as we studied the Bible and Science and Health, guided by the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, we gained a better understanding and appreciation of the textbook.
