Although I was raised in Christian Science and attended the Sunday School until I was twenty, I took a great deal of this teaching for granted. Later, when I had to face up to the trials and problems confronting me after a divorce, I began an earnest study and had Christian Science class instruction as well. I could then appreciate this Bible verse from James (1:22), "Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only."

One winter I became ill with flu. Instead of being alert to counteract this suggestion with the truth that man's health is spiritual and therefore inviolate, I reasoned that after a good night's sleep I would be all right. In the morning the symptoms were alarming; I also could not eat or drink and had difficulty reading.

I phoned a Christian Science practitioner to help me rid myself of fear. There was a need to stop looking to matter for cause and effect and to understand that disease is truly baseless, unreal. My husband read to me and I prayed, but after several days of continued inability to take food, I was becoming weak and discouraged.
