After the star
What happened to the wise men and the shepherds, after?
After they viewed the promised babe?
After they journeyed, praying, believing, and found
not a crowned, haloed king
but a child asleep in a lowly place?
Where did they go after? These wise men, these shepherds?
Did they not remain with the ever-dawning Christ?
Did they not take a bit of light into the night forever after?
They had taken the first tentative steps toward the star
with light growing more brilliant, less distant.
Do you think they could have returned to their old lives untouched?
Listening to the angels, following, bearing gifts—
they left heaped with much more.
Now listening to the angels, and following,
we too can find the Christ
everywhere!
