When I was in the depths of despair due to a medical verdict...
When I was in the depths of despair due to a medical verdict regarding the health of our daughter, this statement was written to me in a letter by a dear friend: "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 463). The doctors had told my husband and me that our daughter had a malignant thyroid tumor and they had done all they could for her. They said she could possibly live two years more, and then we must prepare ourselves for her passing. Since I had been trained as a medical nurse, these thoughts overwhelmed me, until the above statement was presented to me along with a copy of Science and Health. I also consulted a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to help me overcome my extreme fear. The struggle was long and arduous. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 382), "A patient thoroughly booked in medical theories is more difficult to heal through Mind than one who is not." I recognized the need to unlearn false education, especially after pondering this helpful statement (ibid., p. 412): "If the case is that of a young child or an infant, it needs to be met mainly through the parent's thought, silently or audibly on the aforesaid basis of Christian Science."
There were many negative beliefs that had to be overcome, such as a false sense of responsibility regarding the care of our children. I won freedom from guilt feelings and learned how to protect myself from the temptation to sympathize with error.
Membership in The Mother Church gave me a feeling of strong support. Class instruction was most helpful in uncovering latent errors in thought to clear the way for the healing of fear and the restoration of our daughter's health. Branch church membership was the last step taken to strengthen my understanding of the allness of God and the nothingness of error. My gratitude would not be complete unless I also mentioned the tremendous help the Christian Science periodicals have been to me.
