When I was fifteen years old a friend invited me to go to the local Church of Christ, Scientist, and on arrival she directed me to the Sunday School. Until this time, I had been brought up in a Protestant faith and had, in fact, been confirmed, but had found in this teaching no comfort or real understanding of God. I had, however, a deep love of the Bible. From that time onward I regularly attended the Christian Science Sunday School until I was twenty.
Throughout the years I have had many physical healings and have derived much help from Christian Science in my daily profession. About twelve years ago one of my wards had mumps. A Christian Science practitioner was helping the child, but we obeyed the law concerning children under sixteen and notified a doctor. A doctor came and examined the child and said it was necessary for her to check the rest of the household. In the course of this examination she located a small growth on my neck. I began to pray consistently in regard to this unnatural growth, but it became larger. After about five years I decided to have the help of a Christian Science practitioner for the condition.
We worked together for about four years, and during this time a number of false traits of character were uncovered and corrected, but there was a hardness to be overcome. The loving prayer of the practitioner located the exact nature of this trouble, and I took steps to eradicate this deep-seated hard core of unchristian thinking. For a while the place on my neck continued to grow, and it became impossible to hide, even with roll-necked jerseys, which I usually wore. Finally the practitioner asked why we wanted this healing, and I answered, "It is for the glory of God, and to demonstrate to the world that Christian Science heals." I looked up references in the Bible, and in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and her other writings, on glorifying God. I became filled with great joy! This joy preceded any visible change in the condition on my neck. I telephoned the practitioner after a few days and explained that although to mortal sight the condition was quite alarming, I had no fear at all, only gratitude and joy. It is my privilege to hold the post of church organist, and the next Sunday, while playing over the second hymn, I felt the whole condition give and begin to drain away. I was so overjoyed I could hardly contain myself. The growth continued to disappear, and within a few days the whole thing dried up and there was a perfect healing.
