Since my childhood I have felt a deep affection for God
Since my childhood I have felt a deep affection for God. I grew up without a father, and with my mother comforting me with assurance that our heavenly Father was taking care of us. I was happy in this knowledge. To be sure, I also heard that He would punish, but this did not quite fit my concept of Him.
Years later my mother became seriously ill with heart and circulatory disturbances. This condition dragged on for over ten years. We had applied a great variety of healing methods and consulted many different doctors, but without success. Then one day the doctor said there was nothing more he could do. He said literally, "Well, God sends evil as well as good, you know." I couldn't agree with that at all. I could accept the doctor's inability to do more, but that God, our Father, would not help us, I could not and would not believe.
I was accustomed to praying a great deal. One morning when I went to school I was in great despair. My teacher, who knew of my mother's illness, noticed this and asked me to see her after class. She told me about Christian Science—that it heals even serious cases. In her family a case of paralysis had been healed. At that moment I knew we had found in Christian Science what we needed. My teacher brought me a copy of The Herald of Christian Science, German Edition, and the book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I went home overjoyed.
