Christmas—its real import

Christendom rejoices each year in commemorating the unparalleled birth of the infant Christ Jesus in Bethlehem of Judea. "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful," Isa. 9:6; Isaiah prophesied.

The pure spiritual sense of the Virgin Mary was awakened to the true nature of her offspring—the divine idea of God, something far more significant than flesh and blood. She recognized this as the Saviour, appearing in fulfillment of prophecy.

The simple narrative of Mary and her child opens the door for us to become aware, as she did, of the spirituality and perfection of man, the pure manifestation of the one divine Mind. "Those instructed in Christian Science have reached the glorious perception that God is the only author of man," Mrs. Eddy writes. "The Virgin-mother conceived this idea of God, and gave to her ideal the name of Jesus—that is, Joshua, or Saviour." Science and Health, p. 29; Though the virgin birth was a unique event, necessary to the mission of Jesus, we too can look deeply and continually into perfect Mind, the creator of all that is real, seeing the perfection of God's workmanship. God's man can only be and do and express what the divine Mind eternally causes him to be and do and express.
