Celebration in the desert

In the dry desert
with no human care
the Christmas cholla*
decks its branches with
strings of fruited ornaments.

And in the world's wilderness
midst parched talk of lack
and loneliness
mustn't we dare
to send forth our faith and hope,
strung in abundance
and blossoming anew?

Let's joyfully give,
knowing that for us, too,
the Love that is Life
bathes human consciousness
with pure waters of Truth,
here and now
nurturing
each
in His way.

Susan W. Sherwood

*Jumping cholla (pronounced choy' a) is a prickly, jointed cactus. Its old fruits bear flowers, forming new fruits linked to the old in chains.
