No nature apart from the divine
Most people believe they are physical persons who were born of human parents with a selfhood apart from God. Yet Jesus made himself known as the Son of God and said to the multitudes and to his disciples, "Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven." Matt. 23:9; Jesus knew and lived his divine nature, the Christ, his God-given spiritual selfhood, and was known as Christ Jesus.
Christian Science explains that every individual can learn of his real selfhood and parentage. He can be healed of the belief that he is a material person who has inherited or acquired a nature separate from the divine. It is this supposed mortal nature that holds one to belief in material selfhood and causes him to accept and react to the other beliefs of animal magnetism, alias mortal mind, that constantly knock at the door of consciousness, thus bringing into his experience evil in many forms.
Mrs. Eddy tells us of this nature in Miscellaneous Writings, where she states: "The nature of the individual, more stubborn than the circumstance, will always be found arguing for itself,—its habits, tastes, and indulgences. This material nature strives to tip the beam against the spiritual nature; for the flesh strives against Spirit,—against whatever or whoever opposes evil,—and weighs mightily in the scale against man's high destiny."Mis, p. 119;
