There's also a time for reaping

Are You Still Plowing?

There is an interesting parable in the writings of Isaiah that relates to each one of us. See Isa. 28:23-29; It concerns the work of a farmer, busy applying his knowledge and skill in preparing the soil for various seeds. He must intelligently plan the depth and width of a plowed furrow according to the kind of seed sown. Wheat, barley, rye, are different grains and must be handled differently.

Does the farmer continue to plow all the time? No, there comes a time to sow the seed. And when the harvest comes, the method of threshing fits the grain. There is rough usage for the coarse grain, less bruising for the finer.

There is steady progression in all these activities of the farmer. Each step has purpose. There is no haphazard, accidental, merely repetitious, meaningless, unintelligent action. Even the overturning and harrowing of the ground have a purpose beyond mere disruption or destruction. These are done so the new seed can be sown. The story points to the intelligent direction and purpose God provides for man.
