Where Is Our Real Protection?
Recently I saw a television presentation geared to help those living in earthquake-prone areas understand better how to deal with such an eventuality. The program was well done; it contained no scare tactics. It was simply an informative portrayal of what happens when an earthquake occurs, what you should and should not do, the aftereffects usually suffered by the victims, and how to cope with these difficulties psychologically.
As I listened I could not help but regret the complete absence of any thought of turning to God for comfort and direction—God, who has through the ages been the greatest source of protection and guidance to mankind, including people of all faiths and varying concepts of a Supreme Being.
A verse from the Bible came to mind: "Go forth, and standupon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."I Kings 19:11, 12; What a priceless possession one has, having learned to turn to God for protection and direction, to listen for that "still small voice."
