God Did Not Make Earthquakes
In a country where there are frequent earthquakes, fear of them may be unconsciously nurtured. To scientifically measure the earthquake wave or to come out with an emergency plan in the event of an earthquake may be necessary for a nation or a city. But even as such efforts are being made, we can know the basic truth of God's universe and be fearless; and we will be led by the truth and protected from earthquakes, or from disasters that come from them.
In Christian Science we accept the spiritual creation recorded in the first chapter of Genesis as the only real creation. According to this record, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Gen. 1:31; Earthquakes certainly are not good. Therefore God has not made them. When we see even a glimpse of Spirit's perfect creation, the omnipotent power of God can be felt.
Whenever I feel an earthquake tremor, I turn my thought to God's spiritual creation. When such prayerful efforts reach the point where I am satisfied—in other words, when in my consciousness the spiritual creation alone is real—the earthquake can no longer claim to threaten my peace and safety. This confirms what our Master, Christ Jesus, said: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32;
