NOTE TO NICODEMUS
It was at night that
Jesus patiently
spoke to you, Nicodemus,
about spiritual rebirth.
Was he remembering
that his human birth
had been attended
by singing night-angels?
And yes, Nicodemus,
spiritual rebirth is difficult
though not because of your
somewhat frivolous objection.
Rather because it seems to
require of
each of us who seek it
to become
the idea-conceiving mother
the nurturing womb
the forthcoming child—
all simultaneously.
But for those of us
who come to the Christ
in the darkness of
pain/despair
no more blessed words
than these can be heard:
Ye must be born again!
