I used to have regular appointments with a dentist to have my teeth cleaned and a cavity or two filled. Then in six months I did the same thing over again.

One time my dentist expressed great concern over the condition of some of my teeth. So I decided to do something about this. At home I got out my Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Concordances. I looked up the word "substance" and jotted down every page and line referred to that I could find on the subject. I looked up each one, made notes on some, and copied parts of others. I even memorized some lines that were especially inspiring. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 468), "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay," and further in the same paragraph, "Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance."

I kept up this study for some time. At the end of the six months, as I'd heard my previous dentist had retired, I chose another, who had the reputation of being the best in town. After examination of my teeth he asked, "Have you changed your diet? There are several small cavities there, but they have all ceased action, and I can't think of any reason why they would cease action unless you have changed your diet." I had not changed my diet, but on the way to my car after leaving the dentist's office it struck me, Of course those cavities had ceased action! They couldn't possibly continue action in the face of all that good, prayerful metaphysical study I had been doing on the subject of "substance." So I rejoiced and gave praise to our Father-Mother God, and went home and studied some more.
