Removing Obstructions
A log across a highway can impede traffic until the log is removed. Have you ever thought of faults of character as being loglike barriers to spiritual progress, blocking one's way to perceiving spiritual perfection?
In Christ Jesus' great Sermon on the Mount we are directed: "First cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." Matt. 7:5; The Revised Standard Version uses the words "log" and "speck" instead of "beam" and "mote." The Master's words point up a major task confronting those who long to follow his example and help and heal suffering humanity.
In my youth I had a sincere desire to know how to lead a better life—what to do to get rid of my faults and improve my disposition. From kindergarten days I had been taught the Ten Commandments and had been told stories from the Scriptures. We were exhorted to be good and to do good, but "How?" I wondered.
