I attended college and roomed with a very loving girl who was liked by all her classmates. She was a Christian Scientist, the only one I had met at that time. We both married after graduation. I had three boys and she had a daughter and a son.

There was an extreme shortage of teachers in 1960, and I was called upon to fill a primary grade vacancy. It was while I was in this position that many problems were presented to me and I was to prove Mary Baker Eddy's statement, "Trials are proofs of God's care" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 66). I became ill and was forced to stop teaching in the middle of the year. I was sent to a hospital but nothing seemed to help. A year later I learned the doctor had told my husband I had multiple sclerosis and there was no known cure. My youngest son was two years old at this time. I was sent home with strict orders to rest at regular intervals of three hours.

One Saturday night the doorbell rang, and there stood my good college friend with two Sentinels in her hand. I said, "Betty, if I had your religion, I'm sure I would get better." She had never mentioned Christian Science to me before, but she came to me the minute she heard of my need and offered the most precious gift in the world. Her response to me was, "Anyone can study this religion." Two days later a letter came inviting me to stay with her mother while my friend was away teaching. What a wonderful experience that was! Her mother had been a Scientist many years. She pointed out to me what Mrs. Eddy observed at one time (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 6), "At present the majority of the acute cases are given to the M.D.'s, and only those cases that are pronounced incurable are passed over to the Scientist."
