Matter Can't Talk

Christian Science assures us that matter cannot talk or tell us it is weak and disabled or make any conditions for man. Without resorting to bravado, we can develop, step by step, confidence in Mrs. Eddy's great discovery that matter is not self-acting and that the cause of all physical ailments is mortal mind. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Because matter has no consciousness or Ego, it cannot act; its conditions are illusions, and these false conditions are the source of all seeming sickness." Science and Health, p. 368;

In his healing work Christ Jesus paid little attention to bodily conditions, other than to recognize the need. He knew man's real status and selfhood to be the spiritual offspring of Spirit, God. Referring to the seeming power of erroneous suggestion, he said, "When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils." Luke 11:21, 22;

Christian Science enables us to perceive that the "strong man" is mortal mind; its "armour," belief in the reality and substance of matter; and that the power to overcome and destroy false belief derives from the one divine Mind—Truth itself. The method of healing spelled out by Mrs. Eddy corresponds with Jesus' own assurance, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32; Armed with the truth, we are able to exercise our God-given dominion over the body, instead of submitting to the multitude of ailments, complaints, and weaknesses it would impose upon us.
