I started to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy with only a mild curiosity, certainly with no expectation of having my thought radically changed.

One of my sisters had moved from our home in Kansas to California and had become a student of Christian Science. When she came back on a visit, I would not listen to anything about this new interest. I thought it would make the sister different and a bit strange. My daughter did ask a few questions, and was given a copy of Science and Health. However, she was busy with school-work, so the book was on a shelf for about six months.

One rainy day I wanted something new to read, and I thought of Science and Health. Before I finished the Preface I was interested, and kept reading, becoming more and more engrossed. Mrs. Eddy says (p. 162), "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." I wondered how I could have believed so completely in material causes and conditions. I wanted to put into practice what I was learning. Being a somewhat awkward cook, I soon had burns and cut fingers to work on. I found that the instant denial of pain, and the realization that God knows nothing of accidents, brought quick healing. I had the feeling of pushing out the pain, letting divine Truth, God, fill my consciousness.
