Gaining dominion over oneself
A Spiritual Approach to Athletics
Most coaches would include training high on the list of requirements for a good athlete. A Christian Scientist generally agrees but approaches this subject from a spiritual rather than a physical standpoint. And he knows this approach will bring forth practical results.
What is this spiritual approach? Instead of considering training as a physical conditioning of a material body, the Christian Scientist sees it as a spiritualization of thought, a Christianization of character. This higher training removes limitations and sets the mind and body free for higher performance. The basis for this spiritual approach is the understanding of God as universal, infinite good and of man as God's pure, unlimited expression. Practicing this spiritual understanding, we glorify God by proving, step by step, man's unrestricted abilities and capabilities. (Women athletes can know that the generic term man refers also to woman.)
How practical is this spiritual approach?
