SCRIPTURE'S SWEET SIMILES

truth was a pigeon
a stone wall
these I saw
the morning of despair

I had asked for a sign
and they were there—
the warmth of the bird
the strength of the wall

"He shall cover thee with his feathers"
the Psalmist sang
"and under his wings shalt thou trust"
and prophecy promises a man shall be found
"as the shadow of a great rock
in a weary land"

I wept with joy
for the beautiful bird
and the stone wall
and for centuries
that made them more
than a bird and a wall
