Prayer for All Mankind
How often should we pray for mankind as a whole? The answer must be, "Every day," if we follow the instruction given by Mrs. Eddy to the members of her Church.
In the Manual of The Mother Church the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science gives a short but comprehensive outline of the twofold prayer she desired her followers regularly to undertake both for their own and the world's good. She writes: "It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: 'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!" Man., Art. VIII, Sect. 4;
"All mankind" at this time consists of something in excess of three and a half billion people, and this total is increasing daily. The variety of characters, colors, cultures, religious and philosophical concepts, moral attitudes, and political views comprised in this mass of humanity staggers the imagination. We might wonder how anyone could possibly have the wisdom and capacity to know the specific individual need of even a minute proportion of so many people in order to pray for them.
