As a small child with parents who could neither hear nor speak...

As a small child with parents who could neither hear nor speak, I had a chronic ear problem. Just recently I have realized how much love my mother had, getting out of a warm bed, sometimes on 16-degree-below-zero nights, to comfort her child night after night for almost eighteen years.

My brother who looked after me in my formative years attended university one year, then laid off for me to attend one year. We had planned to be educated in this way, but my hearing was so impaired that I knew long before the first semester was over that I could never take the exams because I couldn't hear the lectures, not even by sitting in the front row. I dropped out, and my brother worked through to his master's degree much faster.

Deafness seemed the main reason for a severe mental depression, which grew worse each year until Christian Science found me. I was open and receptive to Truth.
