At a time when the economic picture may seem black to many people, I would like to tell of an experience that proved of great inspiration to me. Prior to the Second World War I was associated with one of Hollywood's most important producers and represented by one of the industry's top agencies. My professional career seemed to be zooming steadily upward.

After four years in military service I returned to Hollywood to discover that those who had returned before me had taken all the available studio jobs. Months went by and nothing seemed to open up, despite the many hours I spent in prayerful metaphysical study, diligently probing the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings. I was constantly encouraged by a Christian Science practitioner's assurance that God's plan and purpose for me could not be thwarted by what seemed to be disappointment and frustration.

The months turned into years—six years, in fact—during which time I had various odd jobs but nothing commensurate with my former activity. Because of my desire to be active and my persistent refusal to be discouraged, I was led into doing something I had never done before. I started building a house on land we had bought many years previously. Aided by architects, subcontractors, and bank loans, the experience proved unusual and stimulating—so much so, that shortly afterward I started building another house and then another. By the time my professional career was starting back into stride again, we owned and could rent a number of houses.
