Many years ago, when I first became a student of Christian Science, I experienced a fine healing which has been an inspiration to me ever since.
I became ill with a stomach disorder and was unable to eat because of pain and nausea. I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help and was directed to the following passage on page 14 of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy: "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth." As I read this passage repeatedly, I began to faintly understand the meaning; the more I read and pondered it, the more clearly I understood that my life is not in matter at all, and that my real spiritual selfhood could never suffer or be less than perfect. Gradually I began to feel better. All that day I read this passage over and over, and by the end of the day I was completely relieved of the trouble.
About two weeks later I relapsed, and asked the practitioner again for help. This time the pain seemed much worse, and I would no sooner fall asleep at night than I was awakened with pain. I knew that if I turned to God with my whole heart I would be healed, and this I did, praying the ninety-first Psalm. As I prayed, the pain and nausea left me. Again I relapsed after only a few days. This time the practitioner pointed out that my relapse was like a woman who sweeps her house clean—she shouldn't allow the dirt to return. With this explanation, I understood that the healing was in my own consciousness and that, having attained a higher plane of thought, I must learn to keep my thought spiritual.
