At a time in my experience when it would have been difficult to add a new misfortune to my already prolific troubles, I found the light, the dawn with all its glory and promise—Christian Science.

I had left my parents' home and was not on very good terms with them. Then I stopped seeing my friends, although I had always considered them to be important. In my fear and uncertainty I smoked to excess and drank more. All this, accompanied by a diet deficiency, increased day by day the pains of an ulcer that, despite my youth, I had had for two years. And to all this I must add my lamentable financial state, the consequence of my badly managed and neglected work, the strained relations with my fellow workers, and the constant suggestions of limitation that kept me from trying new methods.

A Christian Science practitioner had been introduced to me. I asked him for help and obtained the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and took out a Bible which I had not used for years. The practitioner directed me to the Bible passage (Isa. 41:10): "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
