He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression (Job 36:15)

The Hebrew word for "poor" means also "afflicted, humble." "Openeth their ears" is an idiom meaning "enables them to understand." The "ear" represented in Old Testament thought "the spiritual disposition to attend, which issues in obedience."

A great King above all gods (Ps. 95:3)
