The Bible-Its Value to Us Today

During the week of American Thanksgiving—November 23 to November 30—the Laymen's National Bible Committee is sponsoring National Bible Week. Its purpose is to awaken as many people as possible to the immense value of becoming acquainted with the Scriptures. The Editors of the Christian Science Sentinel are glad to support this effort, as they know from experience how beneficial it is to study the Bible and imbibe its spiritual message.

More than one third of the human race live in countries where it is generally accepted that the Bible is a sacred book. Though not all the population of these countries read it, or even possess a copy, the Bible is widely regarded as above all other books, and many believe it contains the secrets of that ultimate truth of eternal Life which leads mankind to work out of the problem of mortal existence into the happier and more satisfying experience of spiritual being.

Over the centuries thousands of millions of people have studied and pondered the Bible, and one can hardly estimate its total effect on the human race. An entire civilization has developed from the concept of God it presents, and some of the world's most powerful nations are governed by a system of law that owes much to its exposition of the Mosaic Decalogue and the Golden Rule. Family life has been strengthened by its definition of morality and individuals have been inspired, comforted, and directed by its revelation of God's love for His children.
