The Secret Place
One day Sally went to work with her father. That's what she liked to call it when he took her with him on a business call. Daddy sometimes built houses and he had a lot of men working for him. This time they went to a house that was having a whole new room added to it. It was a big room, too, and very tall, three stories high, in fact.
Daddy told her the workmen would be busy putting up a scaffold. Sally didn't know what a scaffold was until her father told her this one was a rough platform supported by big thick ropes, and workmen used it to lift lumber and tools. When it is pulled up to the right height, several men can stand on it and work. Sally was excited. This would be fun to see. She hoped she would be allowed to go up on the scaffold when they got there. It sure would be great to tell her brother all about it when she got home!
Sally was a little disappointed when Daddy told her she must stay on the floor and not wander around much because the busy workmen couldn't stop to talk with her. Still, it was nice to be there with such a lot going on.
