The healing of my husband with the help of a Christian Science...
The healing of my husband with the help of a Christian Science practitioner in 1947 changed our whole lives. The doctors he had seen pronounced his heart condition fatal. In addition he was addicted to alcohol, gambling, smoking, and swearing. This healing, which has been permanent, is described in his testimony in The Christian Science Journal of September, 1963. I might add that glasses, which he had worn for many years, were put aside at that time too, and later, when past seventy years of age, he served as First Reader in a branch church for three years without using glasses.
Years before, on our return home from our first visit to the practitioner, my husband seemed to be better. However, he asked me to go out and get him some brandy, because he was afraid he would not be able to sleep without it. When I came back he had fallen asleep. As I stood looking at him and our two small sleeping children, a statement from a borrowed copy of the Christian Science textbook came into my thought (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 167): "It is not wise to take a halting and half-way position or to expect to work equally with Spirit and matter, Truth and error."
It became clear to me that there could be no turning back. Our former way of thinking and living had brought us to this extremity and only God could help us now. I thought of Joshua's clear, ringing challenge to the Israelites (Josh. 24:15): "Choose you this day whom ye will serve; ... but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." I poured the brandy down the sink, gathered up all the medicines in the cabinet and threw them out.
