I knew nothing about Christian Science when I was asked by...
I knew nothing about Christian Science when I was asked by a Christian Scientist to attend a Sunday church service with him. I went and heard about God who is Father-Mother, who protects and guides and loves His children because He is Love. I must admit I did not understand all that I heard, but I knew this was the way I had always wanted to know God, and from that time I became a student of Christian Science. Soon I realized that the understanding I was gaining through my study of God and man's relationship to Him could also bring about the healing of any physical difficulty I might be experiencing.
A short time ago I was healed of a growth on my back that had grown to considerable size. I had been ignoring this growth for a number of years because it caused me no pain and had not been noticeable. However, there came a time when my husband and I were invited to a dance at the school our son and daughter attended. This necessitated the wearing of formal attire. Since I could not find an evening dress that covered my back, I did not have a very happy time. I was conscious of the fact that the growth was very noticeable. However, this did alert me to see that the condition had gone on long enough. I began a more consecrated study of the Bible and all of Mrs. Eddy's writings, a study that led me to the realization that what I really needed was to get a clearer understanding of God and man. In the Bible we read, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. ... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him" (Gen. 1:26, 27).
In the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the answer to the question "What is man?" begins with these words (p. 475): "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements. The Scriptures inform us that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Matter is not that likeness. The likeness of Spirit cannot be so unlike Spirit. Man is spiritual and perfect; and because he is spiritual and perfect, he must be so understood in Christian Science." I began to see that this was true of me.
