I first heard the message of Christian Science through a radio broadcast. At the time, my situation seemed desperate. I was alone with three children and had large debts, and I was ill and half paralyzed. I prayed much of the time, and while searching the Bible expected an answer from God. The Christian Science radio broadcast answered my aspirations: I heard of a good, just God who is infinite and supreme, and of healing without an intermediary through going directly to God.

A few weeks later, when I was to be hospitalized—for I kept falling down without apparent reason—I had proof of God's healing power. For months I had been meditating on these Bible texts (Gen. 1:2, 27): "The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters," "God created man in his own image," and (John 1:1), "In the beginning was the Word." I was alone and had fallen, and was lying on the floor. In a burst of prayer I cried out to God and succeeded in touching upon these primal truths of His perfect creation. At once everything stopped turning round. I was healed.

Not at all surprised, I got up, radiant, not speaking to anyone about it but earnestly seeking to understand God, Love. I said, "Show me, Father, what to do to heal the rest." The "rest" consisted of disorders of the spine, the lungs, and other organs, as well as of my hands, which could not hold anything. All this was the result of wounds from a shell received twenty-six years earlier during the war. In recent years I had been lying on a wooden board a large part of the time.
