My first healing in Christian Science came about solely through reading the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. A business partner loaned it to my husband for me. We did not know that this book contained rules for healing. I read it at random, and I am sure I did not understand it, but there was a response within me. Without knowing when or how, I was healed.

Ever since early childhood, foods of any kind caused me to suffer. Much doctoring, surgery, dieting, and medication failed to heal me. The terms given for the ailments were stomach ulcers, colitis, nervous stomach, and so on.

Within a couple of months after I began to read the textbook, we were aware that I was eating normally without any distress. All medicines had been discarded simultaneously with my perusing of the book. At the same time I was healed of arthritis. The family physician felt this was so bad that he believed it would be crippling. We had a two-year-old daughter and a very uncertain income, and yet we felt we had to have a maid because I was too sick to do any work.
