The faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy (Deut. 7:9)
The ancient Hebrew understanding of God's faithfulness to His people is never more poignantly expressed than in the word hesed, here, as often, translated "mercy." It is a love that continues unchanged in spite of rejection or neglect by the one who is its object. "The word appears to name both the gift of the Lord and the response of the receiver of the gift. As such, no English word can properly translate it in every instance" (G. E. Wright, The Old Testament and Theology, p. 114).
