A Victory

[Original in German]

Nine-year-old Karl had received a new toy, with rubber arrows and a target to shoot them at. He fastened the target to a wall in the yard and began to practice. The first shot missed. But he got better with practice. Soon a shot landed in the bull's-eye.

At this moment Erhard, the boy next door, came by. Erhard was generally avoided by the other children because he always started fights and hit hard. If the other children fought back, Erhard would run to his mother for help. But today Karl was happy that Erhard came. It was certainly much more fun to compete with someone else than to shoot alone.

But Erhard was clumsy and kept on missing the target. It made him so angry that he shot again and again. Karl reminded him that they were supposed to take turns, but Erhard wouldn't. When Karl reached for the bow, Erhard hit him in the face. This made Karl so angry that he hit back. Then Erhard ran home crying loudly.
