He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold (John 10:1)
When sheep were herded into a fenced-in area or natural enclosure, the shepherd commonly kept watch at the entrance—"the door." He might even sleep there to prevent the intrusion of thieves or wild animals during the night. Jesus graphically illustrates his ministry by this common custom.
