About twelve years ago I was afflicted with a severe mental breakdown. Since medical treatment was unable to help me, I decided to turn wholeheartedly to Christian Science. I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School for a while as a child, and there had been several remarkable healings in our family through the application of the teachings of this religion. So I was naturally attracted in this direction at a time of great need. It was a slow healing, but with the dedicated help of a Christian Science practitioner and determination and persistence on my part to make this truth really my very own, the healing took place.
I held to this statement by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 201): "The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." I worked to replace erroneous suggestions with God's thoughts and gradually overcame fear, anxiety, resentment, and discouragement. This Bible verse was very helpful to me: "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (II Tim. 1:7). I had to see that my well-being was not dependent on person, place, or thing, but only on God.
I found employment, which met all my needs perfectly at that time. This was accomplished when I realized that my need wasn't just to seek material employment but to realize I was always employed in expressing God's qualities of intelligence, loving-kindness, unselfishness, integrity, and all the other spiritual qualities that were mine by reflection.
