Art and Beauty

Some people are conscious of beauty and seek it. Others don't notice it. Others do—but believe that, by and large, it's swamped by ugliness in today's world. But beauty must be found first in our consciousness. And it is, as we get a more scientific understanding of God.

Beauty? Science? What have they to do with one another? Christian Science—the Science of Soul—shows that beauty comes from Soul, God, and as we understand this, more beauty emerges in our lives, and we enjoy the special satisfaction that comes from it. Mrs. Eddy writes, "As our ideas of Deity become more spiritual, we express them by objects more beautiful." The People's Idea of God, p. 14;

As our apprehension of Life, Soul, becomes more spiritual, we become more alive and sensitive to what is intelligent and good. We understand ourselves and our environment better. We start to see and hear spiritually more than with the limiting senses. Sensuality inhibits authentic sensitivity. The so-called corporeal senses see both ugliness and beauty. Man's spiritual senses of sight, hearing, and so on, see only beauty, in multifarious forms. The more we see and feel with the spiritual senses, the broader and deeper our appreciation of art, because the real senses of man are limitless, while the physical senses are restricted.
