"Wellspring" is usually rendered "fountain" by modern translators; the Hebrew word could apply to a free-flowing spring. But its primary meaning, "something dug," is a reminder of what a geologist points out, "the difficulty of sinking wells into the rock in these early times, and the great value of the water when it had been reached" (Hastings' five-volume Dictionary of the Bible).
