Keep Your Freedom!
I once went through a rough testing time. I was suddenly seized with such severe pain and stiffness in the upper part of my body that I could hardly move my head and shoulders. Calling a Christian Science practitioner for help, I said ruefully, "It's probably from driving with all the car windows open. I've always done it, but maybe I've reached the age when I've got to watch out for drafts and things like that."
"That's the human belief," the practitioner said. "But you don't have to submit to it. Why not keep your freedom? Fresh air is a good, wholesome thing. You happen to like lots of it. Why let mortal mind deprive you of it?"
It was a challenge, and I decided to accept it. I saw clearly that fresh air could not be both good and harmful at the same time. Although the discomfort persisted, I refused to yield to the temptation to avoid drafts. I pondered this statement of Mrs. Eddy's: "The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being."
