"AS THE TREE FALLS..."
The tree will lie right where it falls,
and I will fell it there.
I notch it first, then make my cut.
The notch determines where.
I cannot wait for it to lean,
then hope to guide it down,
for once it starts, it goes that way
until it hits the ground.
So,
notching starts in early youth
or later on in years
when Christ first lights within our hearts—
when God as Love appears.
It makes no sense to wait for chance
or age to guide our aim,
for notching calls for healing now,
for practice, not for claim.
It is the mortal dream of death
we fell, and there it stays.
We find instead eternal Life.
(One notches when one prays.)
